TWG TargetMail's infrastructure partner, ExactTarget, developed a proprietary system called the "Content Detective" to help clients ensure that their permission-based e-mails avoid being erroneously labeled as spam due to content filtering. This feature mirrors the logic used by spam filtering software to identify words, phrases, and patterns that are likely to trigger filters, then recommends a resolution to each identified problem, before an e-mail is sent.

Using proprietary technology from ExactTarget and Return Path, all e-mail lists uploaded into TWG TargetMail are checked for integrity and performance. The system checks for known 'seed' addresses that uncover non-permission based lists, and uses hundreds of Return Path's proprietary algorithms to determine whether addresses are valid and mailable. Every list is checked for: format and syntax errors, invalid domains, common domain typos, bogus e-mail addresses, and eNixies (e-mail addresses that have been proven to be bad.) Return Path's E-mail Change of Address (ECOA) database combined with list hygiene allows clients to retain 20 percent more of their addresses each year.

To ensure we don't trigger any volume filters, TWG TargetMail employs domain-level monitoring to manage the number of connections opened for each ISP domain at any one time. This ensures e-mails are delivered at a maximum rate at large ISPs such as AOL or Yahoo. Due to the large percentage of users with major ISPs, domain monitoring is especially critical for lists over 1 million addresses.

White list relationships with key ISPs, anti-spam organizations, and others ensure e-mails sent via our system reach the intended audience. Through ExactTarget, all TWG TargetMail customers benefit from a delivery system that's listed on the "white list" for major ISPs, such as AOL, Juno, Yahoo, Compuserve, NetZero, and others. This white list status allows mail sent from our system to be appropriately delivered to an ISP's customers without the potential for filtering.

Working with ExactTarget, a team of e-mail delivery experts work on behalf of all TWG TargetMail clients to respond to spam complaints received. This ensures that companies following standard opt-in and privacy guidelines can continue to experience optimal delivery rates.

The best way to monitor the deliverability rates of an e-mail is to monitor the e-mail delivery logs. Our abuse desk team uses proprietary software to parse and review all e-mail logs produced by ExactTarget's delivery engine to look for messages from remote servers that may indicate delivery problems. By reviewing these logs and recommending solutions to problems detected, we can ensure our clients continued optimization of e-mail delivery rates.
